How Do Courts Determine Child Support?
Washington State uses a child support formula to determine the base monthly child support amount. The factors include the number of children, their ages, and the incomes of the parents.
The amount of child support that the paying parent is required to provide is calculated with a statutory formula. What Does the Court Consider Income?
Family courts consider gross income from all sources when calculating child support, less mandatory deductions such as income taxes, Social Security, health care, and mandatory union dues. It is important to note that credit union payments, wage attachments, and similar financial obligations are not subtracted when calculating net income for child support.
In addition to a monthly support amount, the court may also order each parent to pay a percentage of the following:
- Childcare expenses
- Private school tuition
- Summer camp
- Extracurricular activities
- Uninsured medical expenses
